The virtues of pain at the pumps

The Globe And Mail -- Both the Liberal and Conservative plans to cut greenhouse-gas emissions will raise gasoline prices, experts warned the House of Commons industry committee this week. That's a good thing. Though it may be shocking to say so, Canada's gas is very arguably too cheap. In any case, keeping it that way would require subsidies such as were doled out from 1973 to 1984, in the self-defeating policy of made-in-Canada oil prices.

A quick glance across the Atlantic reveals how lucky Canadian motorists still are. In Britain, France, Germany and Italy, average prices are about double Canada's, largely due to steep taxes.

We can drill now and postpone the inevitable, but that won't prevent our gas prices from going up. We can continue to conserve and crusade for alternative fuels. Or, we can prepare for life in the United States of OPEC.

"The Virtues of Pain at the Pumps" sounds like something straight out of Hitler's "Mein Kampf" autobiography.

gas is too cheap? must be nice to be rich and not have to worry about being to gas up your car just to get to work while tying to feed the family with food prices up as well and so many people only making minimum wage or out of work all together.

Obviously written by someone who lives in an urban area and figures that we all want to join them.

People in rural areas may choose to be there due to lifestyle, family connections or other reasons. The feasibility of mass transit to these areas is limited and has diminished in recent times -- remember Greyhound's reduction in the recent past?

I agree with an earlier comment -- comparing Canada to Europe makes no sense. The geographic scope and time of 'habitation' are totally different and contributes to differences in city/rural and mass transit development.

Old news and you whiners need to eat some cheese with your wines... We see the Canadian news because it does have some impact on our lives, as well as the fact that GasBuddy is used in Canada as much as it is in the U.S.A.

Why does this author compare Canada to Europe. Why not the US? If you want to compare across countries, you need to adjust for currency fluctuation and services provided. Much of those steep taxes go to pay for things that we have to buy here. If you really want to do a comparison, you have to add in all the costs so that you can actually compare apples to apples.

Cutting back green house emissions is a good thing but not at the expense of the consumer to get richer, the additional costs should go to pay down taxes.

BULL S H_T!

We are EXPENSIVE compared to the USA. Lets talk about a comparison to the USA where we can drive across the border? I don't think we in Canada and USA motorists are going to drive across the Atlantic till a bridge gets built.

We pay almost $5.00 per US gallon now. No wonder Canadians go to the US to shop. US tourists are staying away from here so they don't get RIPPED OFF like we Canadians.
