Some thought Eisenhower foolish for building the awesomely costly Interstate Highway system. History shows it contributed mightily to the U.S. economy.
Infrastructure is an un-glorious foundation to the nation's welfare. Can you imagine where we'd be if half the money spent on defense and national security over the past 25 years would have accomplished if we'd put it into transportation infrastructure?
"You can always count on Americans to do the right thing - after they've tried everything else." ~Winston Churchill
My fellow Republicans embarrass me with their short-sightedness. In hockey, I learned there are some players you'd rather not have on the opposing team--or your own. We're about to learn some hard lessons from the Law of Unintended Consequences.

Money spent on existing Infrastructure is always money well spent. ALWAYS. And we can NEVER afford it, seemingly. Someone is always is 'chompin' at the bit' to get the new generation of Aircraft Carriers or fund NASA but people are loath to take care of our daily needs. It's like getting money for Christmas and your folks spending it on new underwear for you: Yeah, you need it, and yeah, it'd be ok to have .... BUT there are many, MANY other things that YOU'D rather spend it on.

The problem with all this public money that has been spent has been very ineffective in stimulated the economy. In fact, it can be argued that, in the long run, it's made it worse. Bush's money give-away to Wall Street has only increased the size of these mega-banks and has severely hurt the midsize and small banks. Thus, "too big to fail" got even bigger and more powerful. And Obama's Auto-saving plan was too focused on saving obsolete jobs at the expense of creating new and viable jobs. None of this will help the economy; jobs will be the only way to get the country back on track. So 1.5 years after Obama takes office, now he wants job creation? With this lack of leadership, we have another decade of recession to go, folks.

Hay Sneakers,
You made some very interesting responses to many of the political comments that were posted.

That aside, according to some who constantly say that articles that do not DIRECTLY have something to do with the gas pump price of TODAY do not belong on the GB blog.
I do not agree and my belief is the GB blog looks beyond today, and we must discuss how to create positive energy in the future.
Please expand on your comments.

Probably some of this money should have been spent earlier on simple maintenance.

How about a stimulus plan to toss out ALL incumbent office holders?

The Republicans have to come up with a solid candidate first.
Sarah Palin is not a solid candidate. She's an airhead Tea Party rock star. And a quitter. Too many ethics investigations to be comfortable in the Governor's Office. Besides, given that her baby-maker daughter Bristol turned out so well, Mama Palin needs to spend more time properly parenting her remaining babies.

Republicans say when Bush-43 in office: "What imposition on civil liberties? Aren't you a good patriotic American?"
Republicans say when Obama in office: "GET THE GUVMINT OFF OUR BACKS!"

Kind of like Bush-43, but no $4 gasoline like we had back then.
Obama takes frequent short vacations, while Bush-43 would disappear to Crawford for weeks. He'd even have heads of state at the ranch.
>He figured we need a pacifier to get him re-elected.
He's not on the ballot this time around.

Looks like he's been talking to ol' Joe Biden again! I can just hear the conversation: "Hey, B. Hussein ol' buddy! Let's keep spending our way out of debt!"

Sounds like a STIMULUS plan for the dems to stay in office. He's looking 2 years down the road when it's his turn to go away.

Funny, it seems that everyone was talking, throwing away money and vacationing all over ther place before the bubble burst. And now those same people are complaining about the government.

"He won't get any votes from the Republicans."
There are a number of Democrats facing the November election that won't vote for it either.

Like I said to start with, the should have given the money to the American people. They would have kept spending and we would not have gone into a recession like this. Some of the business that were in trouble might have failed and should have failed, but we would not still be in a recession.

We do need to invest in our infrastructure. Now why wasn't this all a part of last year's stimulus?

This is a little late, let do some real project and spend 50 billion on free public transportation. i guys from india tell me they can ride the train for 600 miles for $3 dollars a person on family outing, in sleeping compartment.
