Gas prices fall, but your lead foot is still costing you 20 cents more per gallon, experts say

NY Daily News -- Gas prices dropped nationally for the fifth week in a row, says the US Energy Information Administration. We’re now paying an average of $3.70 a gallon, down from $3.94 recorded on April 2nd. Analysts have even backed off on their months-ago predictions of 5 dollars-plus per gallon by summer.

But you’re paying 20 cents more a gallon for gas when you speed, say experts.

Drivers can assume that each 5 MPH they drive above 60 MPH is like paying an additional 20 cents a gallon, according to the Governor's Highway Safety Association (GHSA). Additionally, aggressive highway behavior such as speeding, rapid acceleration and braking can lower gas mileage by a whopping 33% at highway speeds and 5% around town.

Truckers, whose profit margin is affected by the cost of gas, have eased up on the

The reasoning is very logical...but the temptations of the lead foot are so very heavy.

It's common sense, but sobering news.

Those numbers do not match up with my experience. My fuel economy does not drop off much until the vehicle is doing more than 80 mph. As such I keep my speed within 5 mph of the posted speed limit (conditions permitting).

I can agree with sluggopyle, but I also do as BanTheEPA states. I have found I stay at the speed limit. For those 3 - 4 hour trips, it is not worth the time savings to speed. However, if there is the occasional slow poke, I be sure to get as far away from them as possible. I have had very few people irate with me. I considerately try to stay to the right (except for occasional passing) and allow anyone who wants to dangerusly speed and weave in and out of traffic, pass me right by.

Indeed it is. I have the right to use my lead foot. And I'm willing to pay for the heightened cost it creates. It still is a free country.

Maybe cars should be made not to go over 60-65mph.

The speed limit around here is 55 mph and very few go a lot faster. I keep it between 55 and 60 and pass more often than I am passed. There is a lot of police presence and not enough traffic to make “go with the flow” relevant. I also get 33 to 36 mpg with a car that is rated at 27 mpg by the EPA for highway driving.

Wind, road conditions and temperature all play a larger factor in your MPG'S than 5 MPH either way on the speed. Drive a speed that feels good for the car and the prevailing conditions.

Well said kgbellman,

now slug,
There's nothing cute about my child getting injured in a car accident and if you paid attention you would have seen that I identified the bad guy here.."Sure the guy behind me should have been paying alot more attention but who expects people to drive that slow in normal traffic?" Remember reading that? I blame the guy that hit me but I also blame the poke also for setting the situation up. If he had not been poking first, then the Expedition would not have come along second.
Again, I am not advocating driving like a fruitcake, just keeping up with traffic. I am talking about a situation where an overwhelming majority of the vehicles are moving within 5mph of each other, whether it be 50mph or 70 mph. I have a car with 20k on it and another daily driver with 275k, obviously I am obviously not one of these lunatic panicked drivers that is heck bent on tearing up my car, unless you have another expert opinion. What kid of jalopy do you have? Most cars today can handle a good 70mph!

=> First off I'm not advocating speeding, only going with the flow of traffic. <=

Damn, I was all set to tell you about thinking like sheep, and you already have a degree. Me, I've never done that but I observe it. It's hilarious.

Cute story. Read it back to yourself and notice who the bad guy is. Let me know if it sinks in.

Me, I've never had a near hit from driving sensibly on the highway while some whizbang gets himself off. Well, maybe they did, but that's their own doing. I just watch 'em whiz by, enslaved to their own sheepthink --often more than once, since they have to stop for gas more often and do it all over again. And later on the side of the road scratching their head wondering why their engine blew up while mine clicks over 400,000 miles. As I said, hilarious.

Now if I were to join them in the same sick game, that wouldn't be so hilarious. It would just be stupid.

Sheep get sheared -- in this case at the pump. Try making your own decisions. Mob mentality is for the Mob.
