More Americans will hit the road this holiday weekend than a year ago. And they'll have a bit more money to spend thanks to lower gas prices.

Memorial Day kicks off the summer travel season, and since pump prices never reached $4 or $5 a gallon, as feared, economists says travelers are likely to dine out or shop more once they pull off the road.

About 30.7 million people will drive more than 50 miles for Memorial Day trips, according to auto club AAA. That's 400,000 more than last year, a jump AAA attributes to improvement in the economy and consumer attitudes.
The number of holiday travelers grows to 34.8 million when you include planes, trains and other means of transportation.

A drop in gas prices encouraged Americans to spend more at restaurants and bars in April.

To many, Memorial Day is the unoffical start of summer. But it is also a day of remembrance — particularly of our service men and women.

So far I've driven 250 miles and haven't seen it. Course we're mountain lovers not shore bunnies.

Holidays are nothing but "Same Crap Different Day" for me except July 4th. I prefer to work those days.

The articles states "improvement in the economy and consumer attitudes." Interesting. I don't believe it.

I suppose sometimes you just have to splurge for the holiday weekend. Hopefully everyone has a safe, happy & fun Memorial Day weekend no matter what they do. You don't have to travel to celebrate the holiday & have fun. ; )

What a joke. People get use to higher prices and return to what they had been doing.

It amazes me how we have been brain washed to be so happy about gas under $3.80/gallon.
