DETROIT (Reuters) -- Most young American drivers agree that it is dangerous to text while driving, but nearly a third admit they do it anyway, a survey by Consumer Reports shows.

While eight in ten said they knew of the risks, about 29 percent of drivers 16 to 21 said they had used text messaging in the past month, the survey found. And, 47 percent said they had made a phone call while driving, without a headset or other hands-free device.

The same survey showed that 48 percent said they had seen one or both of their parents using a cell phone without a hands-free device.

People don't care. The signs near the schools clearly state no cell phone usage, but people are still utilizing them while driving. If you're stopped at a red light and want to check or send a quick text; I don't have a problem with that.

It's not just the kids. As the article points out, it's adults, too.

It sucks when the parents are telling the kids not to do this, but they are doing it themselves. Like the smoking parent that says don't smoke. Lead by example Mom, Dad.

Of course they realize the risks, but until they suffer from the consequences they will continue to take them.

We're all risk takers until something happens.

It all falls back on laws, the support of them and the penalties. You may go ahead and text if you get a $25.00 fine. If you get a $500.00 fine and your car is impounded the word will get out in a hurry.

Driver's Education in High School wouldn't have solved the problem completely but it would have helped.

Alabama just made texting while driving illegal. Maybe that will stop some of it in Dixie.

Some learn the hard way.

And at the expense of others.
