Luv,
Really? Oil goes up about 8% in a week, and you think gas rising 8% is a "rip-off"?

Where I live the price of fuel raised 19 cents yesterday. Now that is a rip off!

I wish that gas did not have to cost so much. And I think it is aweful when it is at a 107 in the morning and then when I am off work the same day it jumps to 117. That should not be permitted. :(

Uncle Willie, when you say you are boycotting a whol city, do you mean that you don't buy ANYTHING in that city?..or you just don't buy gas there? If the latter is true, that is hardly called boycotting. Many of us consumers buy gas based on where it is the cheapest, and don't buy it in areas where it is expensive, but I don't think that is called boycotting. It just means we are savvy consumers.

Welcome to the site, 650. A quick word of advice: the forum moderators do not want old topics revitalized. They would prefer you post a new topic instead of commenting on a thread which has been dead for more than two months. Why not start a new topic of "boycott politicians" in the Off-Topic zone, and give us a little more information about what you would like to see change in our political landscape?

I live in Edina, MN. I never buy gas in Edina because we consistently have some of the highest priced stations in the Minneapolis metro area. Not that I am "boycotting" Edina's gas stations, I just see no point in buying more expensive gas

I guess UNCLEWILLIE is boycotting, not only a whole city, but this thread he created. For that matter, he's not posting many gas prices.

Even if it's five cents higher per gallon, if you're driving several miles out of your way to get to the cheaper gas station, and several miles back, you might end up spending more on the gas you used than you would have spent if you bought gas at a closer station, even if the price is slightly higher. Unless, of course, you're buying 20-25 gallons. And even then, you might not be saving enough to make the trip worthwhile.

my boycotting of Tennant is still working, I had the Tennant Mayor stop by my house last week. We had a short glass of Templeton Rye Whiskey and some of my homemade piestengle. We didn't get much accomplished, but we had a good ole time talk'n.

So then, if you're city is the lowest priced, you're not boycotting? Is that correct?
Then that doesn't sound like you're boycotting a whole city; it sounds like you're shopping based on comparison of prices.
But, just asking, isn't it possible that you're using more money paying for gas to travel to the lowest priced station in your area? I mean if you're driving to the other side of town, five miles away, and driving five miles back, you have to pay for the gas you used to buy at the lower price.

I agree with UNCLEWILLIE. I buy the lowest available in my area. If you do not, then these gas stations think they get more $$$$ than a competitively priced station.

To follow up BCERB's accurate observation, remember the original thread (of course the original poster doesn't take part in the discussion he started), he drives about five miles away to get gas, meaning he drives 10 miles round trip. If he gets 20 miles to the gallon, he's using about a half gallon of gas; at today's prices, that's about $1.40. If he saves 10 cents a gallon, and buys 10 gallons, he's paid $1 less for gas than if he bought gas near him, meaning he's spent 40 cent more because of driving back and forth than he would have spent if he bought gas closer to him, even at a 10 cent per gallon higher price.

here in montreal canada we have the same problem. If u just leave the island the gas price drop by 3to 4 cents and if u cross the border to ontario (about 50km) it is normally 10 cents cheaper. The best thing to do on your way to toronto from montreal is to fill up your gas in small cities. and a little far from the hwy u get the best for ur money

What Bob said is right, to a point. Rather than saying "...why would I travel out of my way to pay more" I would simply say, "Why would I travel out of my way in the first place.
If you travel out of your way, you're using your time, your gas and your money to pay for that gas. And that money spent driving back and forth (out of your way) offsets any savings at the pump. It's fascinating how many people have no problem driving 10 miles out of the way (meaning a 20 mile round trip), using a gallon or more of gas, and then bragging that they saved 3 cents a gallon at the pump. They spend $2.50 driving back and forth, saved (on a 10 gallon fill-up) 30 cents, and then brag that they beat the system by buying from the lower priced station, or brag that they're supporting the "cheaper" station.
Forgetting for a moment that the higher priced station may be paying a higher wholesale price, or may have higher operating costs (higher rent, salaries, etc.), just because a price is lower at the pump doesn't mean you're saving money by driving out of your way. Think of it this way: If you get 20 miles to the gallon and gas costs $2.80 a gallon, it costs 14 cents for each mile you drive out of your way. Multiply the number of miles you're driving out of your way and back (be it to another city or another part of town) by what it costs you to drive each mile, and that's how much you're spending to buy the lower priced gas. Then figure out how much you saved per gallon times the number of gallons you bought. If it costs more driving out of your way than you save, you wasted time and money.
And even if you did save money by driving out of your way, are you saving any serious amount of money, or are you saving a dollar or less? (And, in the process, using gas - wasting gas - that simply adds to the coffers of "big oil" that everyone says is ripping you off).
The chart that scoutmaster posted a link for is a good tool to use before you drive out of your way to buy at a lower priced station. Just remember, when you use it, that if a lower priced gas station is two miles out of the way, it's two miles back, meaning it's a four mile trip. And a four mile expense.

I'm still gonna boycott the following towns = Defiance, Panama, Westphalia, Portsmouth, Tennant, Corely, and maybe (just maybe) Kirkman. Kirkman does nad a great Pub there with great sandwiches, but the Westphalia KlubHaus has better meals.

You drive from Quincy to tallahasse to save 3-4 cents per gallon? Isn't that about a 15 or 20 mile drive each way?
If you get 20 miles to the gallon you're using at least one gallon of gas, meaning you're spending about $2.50 on gas. If you're buying 15 gallons of gas and save 4 cents a gallon, you've saved 60 cents in the price at the pump, but you spent $2.50 on your travel back and forth. That means you lost $1.90 buying the "cheaper" gas because of your driving out of your way. Not a heckuva good way to save money at the pump. At least not to me it isn't.

Seems like, as I'm assuming Bob doesn't buy gas in Suffolk Country or in New York City, that he's part of a defacto boycott by Nassau County residents.
Just kidding...just kidding.

Might not be a bad idea, but it doesn't work for me. On Long Island, Nassau county has Suffolk County to the east which has higher gas prices. To the west of us is New York City which has the highest prices in the whole state.

G-B I, cannot, for the life of me - ever believe that "it" would ever consider any of the posts by me. You, yes, of course.
Tennant has a population of about 74 folks. This hasn't changed much for about the past 10 or so years, maybe up or down 1 or 2. No one would move there (in my opinion) unless they wanted lower property taxes. Since the elevator closed, there is only a barking dog.
I'm not sure of your comment about the Come and Go (come in and go) station thing in Harlan. Yes, Harlan is our county seat town, of about 5200 folks.

well heck GB, I reckon that I'm could be might recollecting 17 or 18 years ago, when the station in Ten ants closed down - probably about the same time the elevator closed and the "all gal only" dance hall closed. I'd have to go back some in my memory bank to see if I can remember the name of it. I think the owner operator was ummmm - Bernie somebody.
He was a heck of a fella, like to tell stories n stuff. I think it was the grain dust that made him that way.

I assume by Tennant you mean Tennant, Iowa. I didn't realize that Tennant even had a gas station. I thought the closest gas stations were in Harlan. Even if Tennant had a station it's probably not much business. I would think that it would be more service bay/maintenance than selling gas. What does Tennant have? Maybe 150 people at most? At least Harlan has several thousand and schools and businesses whereas Tennant is more like a state of geography than a state of community.
Is the Come and Go gas station (Come In and Go?) in Harlan still there?

I check gas prices and only buy at the lower priced stations. I check all stations on my route to work or to anywhere I am going. I take two 5 gallon gas cans with me. On my way home I fill up my truck and the cans with gas that has been as much as 20 cents cheaper than near home. When I get home I pour the cans of gas into our other car which never has to be driven to a gas station. This is how I boycott higher priced stations.

Can you explain the April 1 gas boycott day? Is this like the May 15 boycott gas day, when you don't buy gas on that day, the gas stations and distributors all become back-logged with unsold gas and the gas price drops nearly in half because of the boycott? Like the ones from the past several years?
Reason I ask is I hadn't heard about the April 1 one before. Does that mean they're doing two boycott days this year to get prices to fall, or if they don't drop the station owners will go out of business because they didn't sell any gas?

I think I understand what he is saying. In my case El Dorado Hills is around 15 cents higher at every gas station just 2 miles away from where I live in Cameron Park. Thus I will never buy gas in El Dorado Hills.
